"On May 9, with Sherif Nasir as leader, Lawrence, Auda, Nesib el Bekri and a small force of Ageyl tribesmen left Wejh. ... They crossed burning lava flats leading to the Hejaz railway. " * Recruiting some 500 more men during their epic journey, they eventually took the Turkish held seaport stronghold by surprise. Considered a near impossible undertaking, Lawrence knew that it was essential to the Arab cause, proving the worth of the Beduin fighters in the Hejaz campaign.
